Nothing fits!!! What do I wear now without looking too ‘maternity’?! These are the challenges I started to face half way through my pregnancy in my second trimester. In the beginning, I could get away with most of my regular clothes and thought ‘this is easy!’ Well, that didn’t last long. As my baby bump grew, I realized quickly that I needed to start getting creative with my wardrobe, especially working at jb and me because I still wanted to be true to my style. This is the most important thing I will emphasize, staying true to your style because when so many things are changing with your body and in your life, it’s important to stay true to yourself, and to feel good about the way you look ☺
So, here are some of my tips and tricks for pregnancy style in your second trimester:
1. NikiBiki’s are YOUR FRIEND
Anything stretchy that can grow with you is key. I LIVE in the long tank, which is long enough to cover my growing belly and also doubles as a sort of belly band so I could wear my jeans longer. By now, I am wearing some jeans completely unzipped with the long tank over to keep the pants in place, then my top, tunic or cardi over that. I bought the charcoal, black and Ivory to start and will be getting the rest of the colors very soon.
Leggings are also the best because they are all one size so they stretch and grow with you! And you can wear them with a long flowy tunic and a denim or leather jacket for a comfortable, effortless look.
2. Free People Free Belly
I have found that Free People has been one of the best brands to find flowy, baby bump friendly clothes. For instance, the oh-so-popular sunset thermal in this stripe is a perfect fit for the beginning of the second trimester.
Another free people staple is the Trapeze Slip. I have been wearing these slips the entire time during my pregnancy and they are so comfortable and easy to layer and wear with leggings. Below I layered it with one of our Wooden Ships sweaters but I also will wear a cardigan or denim jacket over top.
3. Must Have Maternity Jeans
This is the one actual maternity item I have purchased, through jb and me! Did you know that we can order Paige Maternity jeans?! I ordered the Paige Verdugo Skinny in the Nottingham wash. The cool thing about Paige Maternity is that instead of a full panel that goes over your belly and, in my opinion, can be kind of annoying and uncomfortable, these have only side elastic bands so you feel like you are wearing your normal jeans!
4. Tight Stretchy Dresses
Is it weird that I actually feel more comfortable wearing these tight dresses with a good size baby bump? It’s like you don’t worry about how your stomach looks anymore! One essential is a pregnancy LBD (little black dress), but don’t be afraid to try a pattern! We got in this amazing RD stripe dress that I feel so pretty in and will wear for one of my showers.
5. Stock up on Jackets and Open Cardigans
It’s how you will get away with not buying maternity ☺ Layer a jacket or open flowy cardigan over a Nikibiki and you are set. I layered our Kut Denim jacket over a free people top that has a cutout, giving room for the bump. And the best part is you can wear them after you are pregnant!
And lastly, don’t be afraid to stand out… wear fun colors… embrace your beautiful growing body!
