Baby It’s Cold Outside! – A Guide to Fall Jackets

This Fall, the traditional jacket is taking a back seat to bold, new designs. The new Military inspired style, bright colored trenches, edgy leather and vintage denim are the leaders in the Fall overcoat phenomenon. It seems, this season that jackets and coats have become more stylish than in years past. There is more attention being paid to this essential wardrobe piece on issues far more pressing than warmth and practicality. The jacket is taking on major fashion implications. Here are some suggestions for choosing the perfect coat for Fall! The military style is being seen on celebs, a nod to the late Michael Jackson, and is being paired with leggings and skinny denim. The look can also go dressy with black dress pants and heels. A less flashy version of the jacket will create a more subdued, conservative feeling – think less hard-wear and muted color tones. This particular jacket style is more ornamental than some of the other current trends in jackets. This style typically does not offer a lot of warmth, so, it is best worn as an early fall/indoor jacket. InStyle magazine reports on the bright trench trend in their September anniversary issue, declaring the bold style as a “…wardrobe punch-up, paired against Fall’s black, beige and navy palette.” Of course, we love the trench for so many reasons, the top being a cinched waist. Highlighting hourglass figures is part of what makes being a woman so much fun! Leather is everywhere this Fall and the leather jacket is making a HUGE comeback in a new and improved silhouette. The look is body-hugging and made interesting with zippers and modern, architectural lines. This jacket is being paired with everything from jeans to leggings, cocktail dresses to floor-length gowns. I love the “bad-girl” vibe introduced when leather enters the equation! Denim shirts and jackets are also being seen around. The look is faded and vintage. It is being paired with black on the bottom, in the form of leggings or skinny denim and worn with layered t-shirts and blouses as well as strategically draped necklaces. Finally, the traditional coat does have a place in the line-up this Fall/Winter. Peacoats, like LBDs, never go out of style. If you are afraid of investing in a trendy everyday piece – stick with the tried-and-true peacoat. It will look fabulous with everything in your wardrobe. Maybe try one in a bright color, or with embellishment. Happy Shopping, Ladies!
